What to look for in the perfect running stroller

There’s a tonne of jogging stroller options out there on the market today. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.

Based on my running experience, here are the running stroller features that I believe are most important:

  1. Good suspension
  2. Large storage space
  3. Adjustable handle to suit both parents
  4. Lockable front wheel/s
  5. Large wheels
  6. Lightweight frame
  7. Easy clean fabric
  8. A seat that will fit your child for many years

There are other features like a 5 point harness to keep bubs secure, and a sun canopy but I think 99% of strollers now come with these standard.

Different types of jogging strollers

Chariot Style and 3 Wheel Stollers are a type of Jogging Buggy

It’s handy to bear in mind that there are different types of jogging strollers, including:

  • 3 wheel strollers
  • 4 wheel strollers
  • Chariot or trailer style strollers

This guide covers 3 wheel strollers (with the exception of the Kidrunner!) as they are the most safely and comonly used jogging stroller. If you are looking for a guide to the best chariot and trailer style strollers for running, this guide is coming soon!

Best Jogging Stroller Reviews for 2024

1. Bob Revolution (Best All Rounder)

I love this Revolution stroller from Bob Gear. A lot of my fellow running friends swear by it, and for good reason!

It’s spacious, durable design and high weight rating of 75 lbs (34 kg), means you will get a lot of life out of this stroller. Most moms say they have been able to use it until their child was around 5 years old.

Its large wheels make it easy to take this stroller on both sidewalks and rougher trails. The front wheel can be locked from its swivelling position which is essential for a solid run.

We love that the handle is multi adjustable so will easily suit both short and tall parents alike. And, if that wasn’t enough, the underneath storage basket is very roomy making this stroller the perfect option for stroller runs and grocery trips.

2. Thule Urban Glide (Most Lightweight)

Thuel Urban Glide 2 Jogging Stroller

Thule is a trusted  brand in the fitness industry. Their quality products and sleek design often attract many parents, me included!

The Thule Urban Glide is an extremely lightweight but really well built jogging stroller. For anyone who wants to run with their child and still wants the convenience of an easy to use stroller, then this is really worth considering.

I especially love that the stroller can be folded swiftly with one hand.

The handbrake on the Urban is a great feature, especially if you live in a hilly area and want added assurance.  Its large wheels make for a super smooth ride which also means an easier run.

The seat is a tad squishy meaning that your child may not be keen on using this all the way till school age.

Mountain Buggy Jogging Stroller

3. Mountain Buggy Terrain (Best Value for Money)

The Kiwis are known for their innovation, and I think the New Zealand-based Mountain Buggy brand is no exception.

The mountain buggy was my first jogging stroller and I still love it. It’s robust and sturdy frame is definitely built to endure a thrashing and will last longer than you need it!

The interchangeable rear wheels are great for swapping between activities like a muddy trail run and the supermarket. It features an adjustable handlebar and handbrake.

The reclining seat goes to a near-flat position

I feel the strap adjustment clips could have some improvement, but overall this is a great stroller for the price with the features packed into it!

Cons

4. Thule Glide 2 (Best for Athletes)

Most strollers have a swivelling front wheel,  however the Thule Glide has a permanently fixed front axel, as it has been specifically designed for running.

I love the sporty long wheel base which gives it a safe and firm ride, making this model great for speed training.

Thule has put a lot of thought into this model, with its aerodynamic shape for reduced wind resistance and super lightweight design frame of 23.8lbs / 10.8kg.

This stroller is lighter than the Thule Urban Glide we listed above, however it hasn’t won the award for most lightweight due to its limited every day use.

The fixed wheel and long base make this running buggy less useful for everyday use. However, if you are looking for a great stroller specific for running that won’t let you down on your long runs, speed work and training runs, then you should definitely check out the Thule Glide 2.

Summit X3 is the best all terrain stroller

5. Summit X3 (Best All Terrain)

The Summit X3 is one of the more versatile and durable running strollers on the market.  Its rugged design has made this stroller popular amongst the running communnity.

This stroller is similar to the Mountaing Buggy, however it excells with its safety features including its superior 5 point harness and excellent suspension system. The front wheel has a remote wheel lock (situated on the handlebar) which means you can switch between fixed or swivel wheel easily. For me it’s a no brainer to spend a tiny bit extra for the Summit X3.

The Summit X3 folds up very compactly which is great for parents who drive vehicles with limited trunk space.

It also has one of the highest weight ratings for jogging strollers with a hefty 75lbs / 34 kg. Parents looking to purchase this stroller will find the Summit X3 will carry their kids well beyond the time that kiddo has decided he’s too old for a stroller!

Cybex AVI stroller is the most stylish jogging pram

6. Cybex AVI (Most Stylish)

The Cybex AVI might look like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it is a sleek and lightweight running stroller designed for avid runners who want something a little different for their runs.

I especially love the size of its rear wheels, which make small work of navigating bumps at speed. On the downside, the wheels are narrow which means this stroller is best for pavements over all-terrain jogging.

Like the Thule Glide, this stroller also has a fixed front wheel meaking it great for running, but limiting for everyday use.

The mesh sides keep your child cool on hot days but mean you will have to wrap up baby more on cold winter days.

Bear in mind, the Cybex AVI is sold as a chassis and seat, so make sure you are purchasing both if you choose this jogging stroller.

Cons

lightweight jogging stroller

7. KidRunner (Our Pick, Money Aside!)

The last stroller on my list is by far the best, unlike any running stroller featured in this article. If money isn’t an issue, this is the one to get; it’s an absolute game changer!

Weighing only 20 pounds (9kg), the KidRunner allows you to pull your child behind you. Due to its design, you feel very little weight which makes running with your child a breeze.

Hands free running means you don’t sacrifice your running form.

The multiple pieces of the KidRunner can be a little tricky to transport in a vehicle, but for me, I’d be happy to make the sacrifice and have a great running experience.

The waist harness easily unclips if you need to attend to your child mid-run.

This stroller can take time to set up and get used to, running with, but there are plenty of raving fans out there to show it is a stroller worth having.

On the downside, there is  limited space for extra items like diaper bag etc.

How to Pick the Best Jogging Stroller for You

Jogging strollers are essential for staying active with your child if you love to run.  With such a wide variety of options on the market, searching for the perfect stroller that will best suit your needs seems daunting. With our experience, we can help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

A running stroller is more than just another piece of baby gear – it’s an investment in your health and well-being and might just make it easier to incorporate exercise into your routine. And for your child, it is an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and explore the world with a parent safely and comfortably.

Take the time to check each out in more detail, comparing the features and cost, and then choose the right stroller. Investing in a high-quality stroller means enjoying your runs with peace of mind, knowing your child is safe and comfortable.

Factors to influence your stroller buying decision include:

Compactness of Fold

Make sure you’re ok with how big or small the stroller folds to. Do you have a large car trunk? If you’re limited on space, are you ok with a stroller that you must fully dismantle to take anywhere?

Weight

Do you live in a hilly area? Pushing a heavy strolled up a hill is never fun. Also, if you are prone to back injuries, you might be better to opt for a lighter stroller.

Wheel Size

Where do you intend to use your stroller? If you want to take your child on all terrain adventures, you will want to find a stroller with large, thick tyres. If you only intend to use your stroller on side walks and smooth surfaces, you may be ok with smaller wheels.

Speed

If you want to use your stroller for fast speed workouts, consider opting for fixed wheel framed stroller.

Budget

If you have the extra money, it would be ideal to have two strollers! -An everyday stroller, and a stroller specific for running. If you have a limited budget, look for a second-hand model that you can use for everyday and running, on platforms like Craig’s List or Facebook marketplace.

Storage

Do you have space to store a large jogging stroller? The space you have at home and in your vehicle trunk may determine what model of stroller you can purchase.
